Fascia Rot in Mobile, AL: Signs, Causes and How Gutters Help

How to spot rotting fascia boards early, what causes them, and how the right gutters protect your roofline.

Fascia boards don't get much attention until something goes wrong. These long boards run along the edge of your roof, right behind the gutters, and they do two important jobs: they close off the roof edge from weather and critters, and they hold up your gutters. In Mobile's warm, humid climate, a fascia board that stays wet can start to rot, and once it does, your gutters, soffit and even roof edge are at risk.

Here's how to spot fascia rot early, what usually causes it on Gulf Coast homes, and how the right gutter setup helps prevent it.

What Fascia Does (and Why It Matters)

The fascia is the vertical trim board at the end of your roof rafters. Your gutters are fastened to it, so it carries the weight of the gutters plus all the water and debris they hold during a storm. The soffit, the underside of the roof overhang, connects to it as well.

When fascia is healthy, you hardly notice it. When it's rotten, gutter fasteners lose their grip, gutters start to sag or pull away, and openings can let water, insects, birds and other critters into the roof edge and attic.

Warning Signs of Fascia Rot

You can spot many of these from the ground, especially on a bright day:

  • Peeling or bubbling paint on the fascia boards, often a first sign that moisture is getting into the wood
  • Dark stains or mildew on the fascia or on the siding just below it
  • Sagging or wavy gutters, which can mean the board behind them is no longer holding fasteners tightly
  • Gutters pulling away from the roof edge, leaving a visible gap
  • Soft or crumbling wood when you press on the board with a screwdriver (only if you can reach it safely)
  • Gaps, holes or chewed areas where the fascia meets the soffit or roof
  • Water stains on the soffit or on ceilings near exterior walls

One sign on its own doesn't always mean rot, but two or three together are worth a closer look.

What Causes Fascia Rot in Mobile Homes

Clogged or overflowing gutters

This is the most common cause we see. When gutters are packed with leaves, pine straw and oak tassels, water backs up and spills over the back edge of the gutter, soaking the fascia every time it rains. In a city that gets as much rain as Mobile does, a board that's wet that often doesn't get a chance to dry out.

Gutters that are undersized or poorly pitched

If a gutter is too small for the roof area it drains, or if it doesn't slope properly toward the downspouts, water sits in it or overflows during heavy downpours. Our article on 5-inch vs. 6-inch gutters for Mobile homes explains how size affects overflow.

Leaking seams and corners

Sectional gutters have joints every 10 feet or so, and corners on any system can loosen over time. A slow drip in the same spot day after day is enough to start rot in the board behind it.

Humidity and missing drip edge

Our humid climate keeps wood damp longer. On roofs without a proper drip edge, water can also wick behind the gutter and onto the fascia even when the gutter itself is working fine.

Repair or Replace? What to Expect

How fascia rot is fixed depends on how far it has spread. Small, isolated soft spots can sometimes be repaired, while boards with widespread rot are usually replaced. In most cases, the gutters on that section have to come down so the board can be repaired or replaced and then the gutters re-hung on solid wood.

A good contractor will also look for the cause. Replacing a rotted board without fixing the overflow, leak or pitch problem that rotted it just starts the clock over again. That's why fascia repair and gutter work so often go together. You can read more about our fascia and soffit repair and replacement service.

How the Right Gutters Help Prevent Fascia Rot

Gutters are supposed to protect your fascia, not soak it. A few things make the biggest difference:

  • Keep gutters clean, especially through fall pine straw and leaf season
  • Use seamless gutters so there are no joints along the run to leak
  • Size and pitch gutters correctly so they drain quickly in heavy rain
  • Add enough downspouts to move water off the roof fast
  • Consider gutter guards if trees keep refilling your gutters

After a busy storm season, a quick look at your gutters and fascia is a smart habit. Our post-hurricane-season gutter checklist walks you through it.
